Food for thought

If Obama asked you to completely redefine the patent system, what would you do? If you could pull everything out and put in a new system that hopes to fix patent inefficiencies  lag times and biases. How would you do it? Instead of thinking about disrupting industries, how about disrupting the system of innovation recognition? If I learned one thing from class, its that the process should be so easy we don't need a class called patent engineering. Unfortunately, that is clearly not the case.

The patent system is overly complex and far too costly. Everything I learned from patent engineering leads me to conclude that filing a patent is a daunting task. Structuring and classifying patents in order  for it actually have value and protection for me is a huge issue in its own right. Then I have to balance actually creating the product I was aiming to create. I wonder what the process is in the backend for approving patents? As the number of patents grow, what is the system for finding prior art? Is there an efficient and cost effective way to categorize patents, determine novelty, and correspond with the patentee?
